take your slide guitar and fly

basically it goes like this: there is only one genre of music i completely dislike.

this genre is country.

that being a preface, im not really enjoying the new bright eyes album, cassadaga. in fact, i dont like it. connor might be a good poet/songwriter, but he is no Bob Dylan and he can climb down off his high horse. he tries way too hard these days at sounding nasally, emotional, and profound. but only the first gets done.

i was at a concert last year with my sister at sokal underground and i distinctly remember this indie kid standing in front of me with this girl that he kept leaning into her ear and whispering things. they looked like they hated the music. their bodies were not moving. i wished they would leave. my sister pointed out a bit later that it was him, connor oberst, and his girlfriend maria taylor. go figure. but the part that was really obnoxious was when at the last song connor ran to the front, got on stage, and starting singing along with the band... full of energy and motion. oh please.

we walked out.

so i find this on the saddle creek website:

Once tagged "rock's boy genius" by the music press, Conor Oberst turned 27 on February 15th and even without that in mind it's hard to listen to Cassadaga without hearing a newfound sophistication to the Bright Eyes sound. Producer, multi-instrumentalist and permanent band member Mike Mogis has crafted a swirling, euphonious record, at times bursting with bombastic confidence and country swagger, and at others loose-limbed and mesmeric.
swirling, euphonious...at times bursting with bombastic confidence eh? oh please.

im walking out.
and am going to go listen to some mates of state.
thats where the real joy is.

mystery album 1

how does something like this happen? im caught between feeling like an utter fool and incredibly excited...heres how it happened:

its lunch time. im organizing things on my flash drive. im putting on it some music ive downloaded from work to take home. and im putting it in my "music" folder on my flasher. well, in my flasher i notice this folder titled: "mystery album 1" ...*blank stare*... what the?

the "what the?" was slightly subsided when i remembered that i went through this phase of naming folders with "mystery album XX" ...long explanation, ask me on a road trip sometime...

i look in the folder and find the first music track: "01-elevator_music_192_aac_cbr." so i search my music song list for the word elevator. nothing matches. stumped. hmm. so i do the next logical thing: i import the album into my itunes library and Viola!!

this image appears with "elevator music" playing:

oh glory glory! to the highest! its the new Beck album, The Information. hot dang! i never knew i bought this! i never knew i even had this! ive never even listened to it! but ive been wanting it! (i have every other beck album ever made)

so here i am...listening to beautiful things for the very first time. its such an interesting thing to listen to music for the very first time. it does not loose its spark. a first kiss becomes a second. it never regains its glory. but each new album is like a kiss in its own. such sparkle.

i was going to leave work early. there is a horseless event tonight. did you hear? (but i might just have to sit here and finish listening to this album.

.pray for amelia.

turtles all the way down

people like to talk. they like to talk about things they think they know something about. and they like to add to it. as if they are adding a unique piece of information/fact/opinion on the subject that no one has ever added. even myself, as i write this am writing and thinking ideas that have probably been repeated. this is nothing new. but its all fascinating me right at this moment. why is this? why do we do these things? why do we even communicate in the first place? is it because we long for community? we long to be bonded to others and feel close? to feel as one? am i wanting you all, whoever you are, to read this and bind with me on some spiritual intangible level? or perhaps im hoping for the tangible, im hoping one of you will make note of these thoughts that theyre good, and ill be commended. recognized. ill be the first to introduce these thoughts to you, right? even though im unoriginal, and really im only made up of everyone else. i am not myself. bla bla. what am i saying? rubbish right? brilliance right? isnt it just a matter of interpretation? nothing make sense and everything makes sense. or does it. or does it not? have you ever seen i heart huckabees? one of my favorite parts of the film is this confrontation of a man who thinks he is "all that". and the confronters are trying to convince him he is not. he responds at the climax: "how am i not myself?" then the confronters respond: "how am i not myself" over and over and over. how am i not myself. how am i not myself. google the phrase "i think", you will get 332 million references. i dont even think that many people in the world have internet access. i think another idea is that people want to be right. i think they want to have the correct view, the correct interpretation. i think. or more they want their view to be the right one. and then, once the have a view formed, its like they shut off all other options. they defend. so then, one has to wonder if people like to argue. maybe the whole "people want community" thing is absolutely wrong. maybe people want to fight. maybe we are all warriors at heart and we passionately want to be passionate about something. but we go to our offices each day, or drive in our cars, or get high and play video games and our passion has no outlet other than what we surround ourselves with. so we get passionate about our jobs. we get passionate about being the best Halo 2 player. we get passionate about the girl or boy we are falling for. or maybe its all combined on a plate. resting upon a turtles back. and little kids swirl us around like peas and carrots and cry out because they want to eat brownies. or maybe we are all crazy. or maybe just one of us is. and surly im wrong. because there is always someone that thinks so. but im always right. because the chances that one of those 332 million "i think" phrases say what im saying. but can we really be right and wrong? ive been on a roll the last few weeks saying some terribly "wrong" things to people. i might as well keep the ball rolling. things are not as bad as you think they are. things are not as good as they seem. i am not myself. how am i not myself?

heres a bit that henry david thoreau wrote in his journal on may 4th, 1852:

Men are making speeches… all over the country, but each expresses only the thought, or the want of thought, of the multitude. No man stands on truth. They are merely banded together as usual, one leaning on another and all together on nothing; as the Hindoos made the world rest on an elephant, and the elephant on a tortoise, and had nothing to put under the tortoise.
and here is something stephen hawking wrote in his book a brief history of time:
A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise."
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?"
"You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

a new low

i cannot even begin to describe the excitement ive just found myself in:

Low, one of my all time top ten bands. from duluth, mn. is releasing another record! oh dear. the band has been around for 15 years or so with two main members: alan sparhawk and his wife mimi parker. alan does vocals and guitar, mimi vocals and drums. originally the bassist was john nicholas, but he left and then zak sally was the bassist for years and years. after their last album, the great destroyer, zak left the band, and low fans everywhere were saddened. now, alan did come around an put out an album of him and his guitar stuff, but it just wasent the same.

until now.

they have a new album coming, this time with matt livingston as their bassist. the album is called drums and guns. you can listen to a song from it here, called breaker. its brilliant. its got the transcendent vocals, a beautiful chord progression on the organ, wondrous guitar lines, a little bit of clapping and some amazing drum beats being laid down. way to go mimi!

the album comes out on the 20th of march.

figure out what i need to figure out

kevin quaderer has done what many of us dream about doing. he has quit his job, sold his things, bought a van, converted the van into his home, and has become a bum. a climbing bum that is. oh, and he started a blog to document it. he contemplates:

But why go, now? That's a tricky question, and to be honest, I'm not exactly sure. There are a bunch of obvious reasons, like “it'll be fun!” and “chicks love guys who live in vans, right?” But as far as deeper reasons go, real reasons... I'm still having a hard time figuring that one out. I guess it's part of the mission here.

1. Figure out what I need to figure out.

2. Figure that thing out.

Easy, right?
yes, deep thoughts there kevin. good to hear you have actually pulled those thoughts out of your deeper heart and are attempting to address them.

ive been following his blog and his journey. and frankly, its exciting. exciting to see how he changes. exciting to read about his trip and see pictures of his bloody hands in his "one pair" of pants. he had a great post earlier this week about the business of life. about "firing on all cylinders" he writes:
Like any major change in lifestyle, it takes a while to adapt to life as a full-time climber. As my mind starts to unwind a little bit, it's surprising to see how twisted up it had become running the the rat race of the "real world."

Life can get pretty crazy. When I'm working full time, and trying to stay active as a climber or skier, I'm pretty much firing on all cylinders, all the time. As soon as I leave my desk, I'm usually off to the crag or the gym. Or I'm cutting hours of sleep to squeeze in a few laps in the backcountry before work. Weekends are even worse - How fast can we get to Zion? How many pitches can we do this weekend? Why can't these guys in front of us hurry up, don't they know we only have 19 hours before we have to be back at work?

And in the spare moments when I'm not working, or climbing, or driving to one or the other, those random moments of silence through the day, by comparison, seem empty. The silence seems louder than a car dealership commercial. So I fill it with TV, radio, iPod, computer, cell phone, anything. So long as it's not silence. If I'm not constantly stimulated and entertained, I'm bored.

Which bring me back to today. Today, I'm finally reaching a point where the silence is tolerable again. I took a hike in Arches. I made a few turkey sandwiches. I sat outside for a little while and watched Nick work on a home made bike trailer he's building. I can feel the shift starting to happen in my thinking.

It's a rest day, and I'm finally able to start enjoying a little silence.
exactly.

elvis perkins is releasing his album tomorrow ash wednesday. its beautiful stuff. a soothing beautiful voice full of emotion. simple folky guitar. then comes in the upright base and clean drums, kind of americana-ish. its actually a sound ive never really heard before. im listening to "while you were sleeping" now and i could potentially see it as a replacement for the end scene of the graduate instead of "mrs. robinson." or maybe it would be good while riding on a train through the mountains...

listen to the song "while you were sleeping" here, via my old kentucky blog
also, make sure you check out his myspace page and home page

he is coming to sokal underground on april 4th. i will probably try to go if anyone wants to join me.

though my hard hatred for v-day was slightly subdued when i watched "the science of sleep" last night. oddly enough, Stéphane reminded me of myself all to well. it was like watching a documentary of my life. in fact, at one point i paused the film - so overwhelmed with empathy that i needed to mourn a little for this (pathetic) fictional self. it was all very strange.

IPCC Summary for Policymakers

Due to the extreme importance of this, I will use correct punctuation and capitalization for this post. On Thursday, February 1st, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [link: www.ipcc.ch] adopted the Summary for Policymakers of the first volume of "Climate Change 2007", also known as the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4).

Here is the Media Advisory from the IPCC's website:

IPCC adopts major assessment of climate change science

Paris, 2 February 2007 – Late last night, Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) adopted the Summary for Policymakers of the first volume of “Climate Change 2007”, also known as the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4).

“Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis”, assesses the current scientific knowledge of the natural and human drivers of climate change, observed changes in climate, the ability of science to attribute changes to different causes, and projections for future climate change.

The report was produced by some 600 authors from 40 countries. Over 620 expert reviewers and a large number of government reviewers also participated. Representatives from 113 governments reviewed and revised the Summary line-by-line during the course of this week before adopting it and accepting the underlying report.

The Summary can be downloaded in English from www.ipcc.ch and http://ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu. A webcast of the final press conference has also been posted. The Summary will be available in Arabic, Chinese French, Russian and Spanish at a later date. The full underlying report will be published in English by Cambridge University Press.
[link: http://www.ipcc.ch/press/prwg2feb07.htm]
Did you just read that? I really hope you did. 600 authors. 620 expert reviewers. debated line-by-line. Is that enough credibility for you? You might be wondering what this phrase "Climate Change" is. Well its Global Warming. A lot of people are using the phrase Climate Change now instead of Global Warming because there are many more (bad) issues going on with this world's climate other than just the warming of the globe.

Now I doubt many of you will read the whole summary. So I will try to bullet some interesting points taken directly from the Summary. But first let me remind you that the IPCC put out the Third Assessment Report or TAR. The new AR4 is a newer version. Keep in mind that in the last five years, there has been MANY studies and reports done about climate change. Furthermore, there is MUCH BETTER climate modeling software that scientists have used in the past 5 years. (And you know exactly what I mean in terms of computer technology. Remember the first iPod? Think iPhone. )
  • Global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have increased markedly as a result of human activities since 1750 and now far exceed pre-industrial values determined from ice cores spanning many thousands of years (see Figure SPM-1). The global increases in carbon dioxide concentration are due primarily to fossil fuel use and land-use change, while those of methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture.
    • Figure SPM-1:
  • The understanding of anthropogenic warming and cooling influences on climate has improved since the Third Assessment Report (TAR), leading to very high confidence7 that the globally averaged net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming, with a radiative forcing of +1.6 [+0.6 to +2.4] W m-2.
  • Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level (see Figure SPM-3).
    • The average atmospheric water vapour content has increased since at least the 1980s over land and ocean as well as in the upper troposphere. The increase is broadly consistent with the extra water vapour that warmer air can hold. (aka more rain and hurricanes)
    • Observations since 1961 show that the average temperature of the global ocean has increased to depths of at least 3000 m and that the ocean has been absorbing more than 80% of the heat added to the climate system. Such warming causes seawater to expand, contributing to sea level rise.
  • At continental, regional, and ocean basin scales, numerous long-term changes in climate have been observed. These include changes in Arctic temperatures and ice, widespread changes in precipitation amounts, ocean salinity, wind patterns and aspects of extreme weather including droughts, heavy precipitation, heat waves and the intensity of tropical cyclones.
  • Paleoclimate information supports the interpretation that the warmth of the last half century is unusual in at least the previous 1300 years. The last time the polar regions were significantly warmer than present for an extended period (about 125,000 years ago), reductions in polar ice volume led to 4 to 6 metres of sea level rise. [ARE YOU READING THIS?]
  • Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations. This is an advance since the TAR’s conclusion that “most of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations”. Discernible human influences now extend to other aspects of climate, including ocean warming, continental-average temperatures, temperature extremes and wind patterns.
  • Continued greenhouse gas emissions at or above current rates would cause further warming and induce many changes in the global climate system during the 21st century that would very likely be larger than those observed during the 20th century.
  • There is now higher confidence in projected patterns of warming and other regional-scale features, including changes in wind patterns, precipitation, and some aspects of extremes and of ice.
    • Projected warming in the 21st century shows scenario-independent geographical patterns similar to those observed over the past several decades. Warming is expected to be greatest over land and at most high northern latitudes, and least over the Southern Ocean and parts of the North Atlantic ocean.
    • Snow cover is projected to contract. Widespread increases in thaw depth are projected over most permafrost regions.
    • Sea ice is projected to shrink in both the Arctic and Antarctic under all SRES (modeling) scenarios. In some projections, Arctic late-summer sea ice disappears almost entirely by the latter part of the 21st century.
    • It is very likely that hot extremes, heat waves, and heavy precipitation events will continue to become more frequent.
    • Based on a range of models, it is likely that future tropical cyclones (typhoons and hurricanes) will become more intense, with larger peak wind speeds and more heavy precipitation associate with ongoing increases of tropical SSTs.
  • Anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the timescales associated with climate processes and feedbacks, even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized.
    • Climate-carbon cycle coupling is expected to add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as the climate system warms, but the magnitude of this feedback is uncertain. This increases the uncertainty in the trajectory of carbon dioxide emissions required to achieve a particular stabilization level of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Based on current understanding of climate carbon cycle feedback, model studies suggest that to stabilise at 450 ppm carbon dioxide, could require that cumulative emissions over the 21st century be reduced from an average of approximately 670 GtC to approximately 490 GtC.
Okay, that enough quotes from the Summary for Policymakers release. I hope you read it yourself, or you have at least read this far. I want to include one more figure showing the surface temperatures of the globe and individual continents over the last 100 years. The observed temperatures are plotted on the black line. You might notice, that the earths temperature went down a bit from about 1940-1970. Older folks may remember back in the 70's there was actually concern of a global cooling. What people don't realize is that aerosols exert a cooling influence. Aerosols are particulates, alternatively referred to as particulate matter (PM), or fine particles. Some aerosols occur naturally, originating from volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland fires, living vegetation, and sea spray. Then there are anthropogenic aerosols. These are made by human activity like sulphate aerosols from fossil fuel combustion and particulate pollution such as smog. See, aerosols or particulates block sunlight, and thus cools the earth. With the introduction of many industries at the beginning of the century, many anthropogenic aerosols were introduced into the atmosphere. The effect of these aerosols had a quick effect on the atmosphere and its believed this may have initially caused a slight cooling period in the middle of the century. But greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions have completely overtaken the effect and are warming the globe.

plant a freaking tree and ride your bike.

r. falcon

Robert Falcon Scott, as some may know as "scott of the antarctic" lived from 1868 to 1912 and was a royal naval officer and incredible antarctic explorer. he was the second to reach the south pole. but in doing so, comes a tale of sorrow, tragedy, endurance and heroism.

he and his four companions reached the south pole on January 12, 1912, after marching and skiing about 900 miles. the humbling thing of the exploration was to discover Norwegian Roald Amundsen made it there first about a month before. then tragically, on the return route, scott and his four companions died. only 11 miles from a supply depot. but apparently the south pole was experiencing some unusual cold weather at the time. and what might unusual cold weather at the south pole be? how does daily temps of negative 35 and the occasional negative 70 degrees sound?

this month, previously publicly unseen letters from scott were released by his descendants to be displayed by all at the Cambridge University's Scott Polar Institute. the following is the letter in full to his wife as he wrote knowing he would never see her again. millions of emotions flood my heart as i read.

To my widow,

Dearest Darling – we are in a very tight corner and I have doubts of pulling through – In our short lunch hours I take advantage of a very small measure of warmth to write letters preparatory to a possible end – the first is naturally to you on whom my thought mostly dwell waking or sleeping – if anything happens to me I shall like you to know how much you have meant to me and that pleasant recollections are with me as I depart.

I should like you to take what comfort you can from these facts also – I shall not have suffered any pain but leave the world fresh from harness and full of good health and vigour – this is dictated already, when provisions come to an end we simply stop where we are within easy distance of another depot.

Therefore you must not imagine a great tragedy — we are very anxious of course and have been for weeks but in splendid physical condition and our appetites compensate for all discomfort. The cold is biting and sometimes angering but here again the hot food which drives it forth is so wonderfully enjoyable that we would scarcely be without it.

We have gone down hill a good deal since I wrote the above. Poor Titus Oates has gone — he was in a bad state — the rest of us keep going and imagine we have a chance to get through but the cold weather doesn't let up at all – we are now only 20 miles from a depot but we have very little food or fuel.

Well dear heart I want you to take the whole thing very sensibly as I am sure you will — the boy will be your comfort. I had looked forward to helping you to bring him up but it is a satisfaction to feel that he is safe with you. I think both he and you ought to be specially looked after by the country for which after all we have given our lives with something of spirit which makes for example — I am writing letters on this point in the end of this book after this. Will you send them to their various destinations?

I must write a little letter for the boy if time can be found to be read when he grows up — dearest that you know I cherish no sentimental rubbish about re marriage — when the right man comes to help you in life you ought to be your happy self again.

I hope I shall be a good memory certainly the end is nothing for you to be ashamed of and I like to think that the boy will have a good start in parentage of which he may be proud. Dear it is not easy to write because of the cold — 70 degrees below zero and nothing but the shelter of our tent.

You know I have loved you, you know my thoughts must have constantly dwelt on you and oh dear me you must know that quite the worst aspect of this situation is the thought that I shall not see you again. The inevitable must be faced — you urged me to be leader of this party and I know you felt it would be dangerous — I've taken my place throughout, haven't I?

God bless you my own darling I shall try and write more later — I go on across the back pages. Since writing the above we have got to within 11 miles of our depot with one hot meal and two days' cold food and we should have got through but have been held for four days by a frightful storm — I think the best chance has gone. We have decided not to kill ourselves but to fight it to the last for that depot but in the fighting there is a painless end so don't worry.

I have written letters on odd pages of this book — will you manage to get them sent? You see I am anxious for you and the boy's future — make the boy interested in natural history if you can, it is better than games — they encourage it at some schools — I know you will keep him out in the open air — try and make him believe in a God, it is comforting.

Oh my dear my dear what dreams I have had of his future and yet oh my girl I know you will face it stoically — your portrait and the boy's will be found in my breast and the one in the little red Morocco case given by Lady Baxter. There is a piece of the Union flag I put up at the South Pole in my private kit bag together with Amundsen's black flag and other trifles — give a small piece of the Union flag to the King and a small piece to Queen Alexandra and keep the rest a poor trophy for you!

What lots and lots I could tell you of this journey. How much better it has been than lounging in comfort at home — what tales you would have for the boy but oh what a price to pay — to forfeit the sight of your dear dear face.

Dear you will be good to the old mother. I write her a little line in this book. Also keep in with Ettie and the others — oh but you'll put on a strong face for the world — only don't be too proud to accept help for the boy's sake — he ought to have a fine career and do something in the world.

I haven't time to write to Sir Clements — tell him I thought much of him and never regretted him putting me in command of the Discovery.

built to spill

i really like the band built to spill. here is a video of some concert footage in boulder, CO of the song Car:

link here if it aint showing

and here is some footage earlier that day where Doug Martsch he came out and played a few songs for people that were unable to get tickets. what a cool guy.

link here if it doesent show.

and here is the song Carry the Zero, also performed before the show outside.

with the link again

and the lyrics for lyric-likers:

Car
You get the car
I'll get the night off
You'll get the chance to take the world apart and figure out how it works
Don't let me know what you find out
I need a car
You need a guide
Who needs a map
If I don't die or worse I'm gonna need a nap
At best I'll be asleep when you get back
I wanna see it when you find out what comets, stars, and moons are all about
I wanna see their faces turn to backs of heads and slowly get smaller
I wanna see it now

I want specifics on the general idea
I wanna think what I should know
Want you to do me what to show
I wanna see movies of my dreams
I wanna see movies of my dreams
I wanna see movies of my dreams
I wanna see movies of my dreams
I wanna see it when you get stoned on a cloudy breezy desert afternoon
I wanna see it untame itself and break its owner
I wanna see it now
I wanna see it now

Carry the Zero
I'm not knocking your want
to carry that home

took it with you
when you moved and got it broke

found the pieces
we counted them all alone

didn't add up
forgot to carry a zero

I can't be your
apologist very long

I'm surprised that
you'd want to carry that on

count your blemishes
you can't
they're all gone

I can't see your response
putting them back on

like they're waiting for your guard to fall
so they can see it all and you're so
occupied with what other persons are
occupied with
and vice versa

and you've become
what you thought was dumb
a fraction of the sum

yeah, you've become
yeah, you have become

a fraction of the sum
the middle and the front

and now it's coming back
hasn't it come too far?

I was trying to help but I guess

wrong

i thought i would share a great (and legal way) to listen to free music.

Daytrotter.com get artists (mostly the indie type) to stop off at their Futureappletree Studio One in downtown Rock Island, Ill when they are driving through on I-80. the bands usually record 4 songs using the instruments that Futureappletree Studio has laying around. they release a new set of 4 songs every week. some of its kinda weird. but some of it is brilliant. personal favorites:

Mates of State and Sunset Rubdown

though i, personally have yet to download and listen to them all.

meanwhile, ive been listening to Island

oh and make sure you spice up your day with some indian music (its always fantastic)

pick your poison

from The Sierra Club, link here

In the September/October 2001 issue, Sierra published "Pick Your Poison: An Environmentalist's Guide to Gasoline," by Jennifer Hattam and Paul Rauber, in which we tallied the pluses and minuses of the largest U.S. oil companies. Since then, continued consolidation in the industry has further shrunk the field, and new oil spills and pollution releases have blackened some carefully green-washed reputations.

These companies are among the largest and most powerful enterprises on the planet. The complexity of their organization and activities, the vastness of their reach, and the huge number of variables involved make objective ranking difficult. That said, it is possible to lump them into three general categories, as Sierra editorial interns Robynne Boyd and Sarah Ives do below: the "bottom of the barrel" (ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips), the "middle of the barrel" (Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, Valero Energy Corporation, and Citgo), and the "top of the barrel" (BP and Sunoco). But you don't have to take our word for it: Review the information we've gathered, and make your own choice. --Paul Rauber, senior editor

In the United States, drivers consume nearly 400 million gallons of gasoline per day. Many of them are committed environmentalists who are well aware of the true cost of fossil fuel. They drive fuel-efficient cars and carpool but wonder if they could also send a message through where they choose to buy their gas. Sierra reviewed the records of the eight largest U.S. oil companies, and here's what we found:

Bottom of the Barrel

Middle of the Barrel

Top of the Barrel

read some of these. there are some great stats

F the prius. i heart exxon.

while the oakies freeze along with california's crops, a new island was discovered in greenland because so much glacial ice has melted that for the first time we are seeing the land (or lack of). oh and make sure you make it to the beach soon cause there are record warm ocean temperatures right now.

but if youre going to go checking this stuff out yourself up in the arctic circle, dont expect to see too many polar bears. they are dying off fast. at least thats what our government is saying, and of course they are always right:

The Bush administration has decided to propose listing the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, putting the U.S. government on record as saying that global warming could drive one of the world's most recognizable animals out of existence.
from the washington post.

You know theyre right. they have the widsom and compassion and support of the big oil companies on their side. like Exxon and Shell. i heart exxon. if i get on their good side maybe they will give me money. it seems like they have a lot of it to hand out. and even if they wont give me $16 million at least theyve lowered the gas prices recently. "everybody is loving it." well, naturally. i think i might get that hummer after all. screw the hydrid prius. they cost more, and there are 30 extra pounds of copper and 22 extra pounds of nickel in a prius. i dont want them using up all the earths resources! F the prius. i heart exxon.

Upward Over The Mountain

Mother don't worry, I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry, I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me?
Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body?

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain

Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison
Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain

Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother don't worry, she's got a garden we're planting together
Mother remember the night that the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,
And you cried 'til the morning

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain

bite it frosty

frostbite, lets review (from here)

a. First-degree frostbite is an epidermal injury. The affected area is usually limited in extent, involving the skin that has had brief contact with very cold air or metal (e.g., touching an outside door handle). The frozen skin is initially a white or yellow plaque. It thaws quickly becoming wheal-like, red and painful. Since deep tissues are not frozen (though they may be cold) mobility is normal. The affected area may become edematous but does not blister. Desquamation of the frost-bitten skin with complete clinical healing follows in 7-10 days.

b. Second-degree frostbite involves the whole epidermis and may also affect superficial dermis. The initial frozen appearance is the same as in first-degree frostbite. Since the freezing involves deeper layers and usually occurs in tissue with prolonged cold exposure, some limitation of motion is present early. Thawing is rapid with return of mobility and appearance of pain in affected areas. A bulla, with clear fluid, forms in the injured area over several hours after thawing. The blister fluid is extravasated from the dermis. Usually, the upper layers of dermis are preserved which permits rapid re-epithelialization after injury. Second-degree injuries produce no permanent tissue loss. Healing is complete but takes three to four weeks. Some amount of first-degree injury is frequently present in the immediate vicinity of second-degree frostbite. Frostbite should be looked for on all other exposed areas. Following second-degree frostbite, cold sensitivity may persist in the injured area.

c. Third-degree frostbite involves the dermis to at least the reticular layer. Initially, the frozen tissue is stiff and restricts mobility. After thawing, mobility is restored briefly, but the affected skin swells rapidly and hemorrhagic bullae develop due to damage to the dermal vascular plexus. The swelling restricts mobility. Significant skin loss follows slowly through mummification and sloughing. Healing is also slow, progressing from adjacent and residual underlying dermis. There may be slight permanent tissue loss. Residual cold sensitivity is common.

d. Fourth-degree frostbite involves the full thickness of the skin and underlying tissue, even including bone. Initially the frozen tissue has no mobility. Thawing restores passive mobility, but intrinsic muscle function is lost. Skin reperfusion after thawing is poor. Bullae and edema do not develop. The affected area shows early necrotic change. The injury evolves slowly (weeks) to mummification, sloughing, and auto-amputation. Whatever dermal healing occurs is from adjacent skin. Significant permanent anatomic and functional loss is the rule.

e. Corneal frostbite is a rare, but profoundly disabling injury. The evolution is similar to any deep ocular keratitis. Permanent corneal opacification requiring corneal transplant is a common outcome.

now lets talk temps (link InteliHealth here)

Frostbite is the freezing of body tissues (skin, muscle, bone) in extreme cold. At or below 59° Fahrenheit, blood vessels close to the skin start to narrow (constrict). This helps to preserve your core body temperature. In extreme cold or when the body is exposed to cold for long periods, this protective strategy can reduce blood flow in some areas of your body to dangerously low levels. The combination of cold temperature and poor blood flow can cause tissue injury. Frostbite is most likely to happen in body parts farthest from the heart, and those with a lot of surface area exposed to cold. These areas include the toes, fingers, ears and nose.

Body tissue will not freeze until the outside temperature is at or below 28° Fahrenheit. If areas of tissue exposed to extreme cold begin to freeze, ice crystals form in some cells and fluid flows into these cells. This can cause the cells to burst. Additional damage can occur when the tissue is warmed again, because damaged blood vessels can leak fluid and proteins into tissue, causing swelling and blistering.

first aid, from MedlinePlus, link here:

1. Shelter the victim from the cold and move the victim to a warmer place. Remove any constricting jewelry and wet clothing. Look for signs of hypothermia (lowered body temperature) and treat accordingly.

2. If immediate medical help is available, it is usually best to wrap the affected areas in sterile dressings (remember to separate affected fingers and toes) and transport the victim to an emergency department for further care.

3. If immediate care is not available, re-warming first aid may be given. Immerse the affected areas in warm (never HOT) water -- or repeatedly apply warm cloths to affected ears, nose, or cheeks -- for 20 to 30 minutes. The recommended water temperature is 104 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep circulating the water to aid the warming process. Severe burning pain, swelling, and color changes may occur during warming. Warming is complete when the skin is soft and sensation returns.

4. Apply dry, sterile dressing to the frostbitten areas. Put dressings between frostbitten fingers or toes to keep them separated.

5. Move thawed areas as little as possible.

6. Re-freezing of thawed extremities can cause more severe damage. Prevent re-freezing by wrapping the thawed areas and keeping the victim warm. If re-freezing cannot be guaranteed, it may be better to delay the initial re-warming process until a warm, safe location is reached.

7. If the frostbite is extensive, give warm drinks to the victim in order to replace lost fluids.

Do Not

  • DO NOT thaw out a frostbitten area if it cannot be kept thawed. Refreezing may make tissue damage even worse.
  • DO NOT use direct dry heat (such as a radiator, campfire, heating pad, or hair dryer) to thaw the frostbitten areas. Direct heat can burn the tissues that are already damaged.
  • DO NOT rub or massage the affected area.
  • DO NOT disturb blisters on frostbitten skin.
  • DO NOT smoke or drink alcoholic beverages during recovery as both can interfere with blood circulation.

Call immediately for emergency medical assistance if

  • There has been severe frostbite, or if normal feeling and color do not return promptly after home treatment for mild frostbite.
  • Frostbite has occurred recently and new symptoms develop, such as fever, malaise, discoloration, or drainage from the affected body part.

BMKFNBMS

so recently, ive been having this "securanoia." sort of.

i have probably close to 700 bookmarks. you know what they are. they're "favorites" as Internet Explorer calls them. you know. but i like firefox, and firefox calls them bookmarks. so bookmarks they are. at work i bookmark a million things. and i love the folders you can create within folders with bookmarks for everything. and on break time i like to surf the web and i bookmark things that are exciting. things i like to go back to. of course there are rss feeds. (click here to learn more about rss feed) which are brilliant by the way. and i fully utilize rss feeds. but then there are those sites that dont have them. and there are those sites that i want to bookmark anyways. to give you an example, i have a folder in my bookmark toolbar called "breaktime" in there is another one called "bike" and in there another called "bike routes" in this folder are several bookmarks, one particular one is called "haymarket to pioneers fast." if you want to see what it is click here. so this gives you an idea.

a few months ago i decided to go to a web-based bookmark system. these allow you to store your bookmarks online of course so you can access them anywhere. i thought this would be a better system, especially since i have two completely different sets of bookmarks. (one at home, one at work.) now there are a lot of webbased bookmarking sites out there, but i decided to go with ma.gnolia. why? i liked their logo. im a sucker for good logos. its a pretty little flower with a pistol of a g. sadly, it turns out ma.gnolia is pretty slow. too slow. so slow that since importing all my bookmarks to ma.gnolia, i have caught myself STILL bookmarking things in firefox. dang.

ok, so lets get orgnaized. i re-researched web-based bookmarks. and it turns out (i feel like an idiot for not knowing this) that google has one. i use all sorts of google things. google mail, google maps, google rss, google docs and spreadsheets, google homepage, google guns (oh wait...), and even this blog is hosted by google. but heres where the securanoia comes in. i have this theory that maybe the government owns google. or maybe they will someday. this is highly plausible. why? well cause if they did, they would have access to pretty much anything and everything i do on the web. they can read my mail, they can look at my chats in google talk, they can look at docs and my searches on the web and on and on. and so to import all my bookmarks on there is one more thing. and its a big one. see i have a lot of weird and odd bookmarks. things that...lets just say if the gov. knew all my bookmarks they would bookmark me. so i dont know what to do. yahoo does have an online bookmarking dealio and they utilize folders. i like folders. but i like tags. i want both. and i want it fast. and i want something that is secure. i need to do more research. i do. and im open to suggestions. but meanwhile i have a mess of a system. today i made a folder in my bookmarks called "not bookmarked anywhere" and i put a bunch of bookmarks in there. oh thats good. that like flying.

then i got to thinking about all the crazy systems i have for everything. im OC and i have a lot of OC going on and i had this thought: what if i get amnesia. what if i forget all my OC habits. then i got to thinking i should write a note to myself explaining everything. but what if someone gets a hold of that? well i could come up with a code that ill write the note in. yea. then ill mail the code to my cousin Marky and tell him to not open the letter but to lock it in a safe place until my other cousin Jimmy contacts him. then i will tell Jimmy that if i ever get amnesia to let my friend Mo know in boston. and Ill tell Mo that when Jimmy contacts him to call Marky.

but where will i put my coded letter to myself? and what if one of them dies? what if they get amnesia? what if there is a fire?

im in panic mode right now.

but do keep your eyes peeled for "google banks" when that happens, you should expect the government to make a statement that there are plenty of funds available for Social Security for generations to come.

yes
yes.

always.

meanwhile, the NOAA just published some 2006 end-year results
read the article here: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2007/s2772.htm

and if you do read it, notice that the NOAA points to el Nino for the warming. (and im having scenes of Chris Farely in a cape... screaming). ok but anyways, read this great article from realclimate.org that discusses the problems of blaming global warming on el nino. and el nino, for those of you that dont know, is: The Nino.
